About our next guest:
Sonja Tonnesen-Casalegno, Deputy Director, Programs, Root & Rebound
Sonja is an Oakland, CA-based civil rights attorney who focuses on racial and gender justice and ending the disenfranchisement of people impacted by mass incarceration. She was a founding staff member of Root & Rebound, a national reentry advocacy center, where she served from 2013-2020. Sonja received her J.D. from Berkeley Law School, where she advocated for survivors of domestic violence, criminal justice reform, and youth justice. Prior to law school, Sonja received her B.A. in Urban Studies and African Studies from the University of Pennsylvania, summa cum laude, and worked for an urban nutrition nonprofit in Philadelphia.
