About Our Guest: Joshua “Juice” Walker
In Josh’s words:
My name is Joshua Walker, though in prisons and skateparks I’m known simply as “Juice.” I’m consumed by a dream: that one day every man leaving prison in Texas will be met by “family.”
I was born in the Middle East to missionary parents, and during the first ten years of my life we traveled to more than 50 countries before eventually settling in Ireland, where my parents still serve as missionaries today.
As a teenager in Dublin, I met Debs, an Irish girl who completely captured my attention. We began serving together in inner-city youth work and married when we were 21. By the time I completed my master’s degree in computer engineering and mathematics, we both knew that youth work was what we wanted to do with our lives.
Twelve years later, we moved to Texas for what was meant to be a short break. While serving with a homeless ministry in Houston, we found a two-month-old baby on the streets. That moment changed the trajectory of our lives. It opened our eyes to the unseen and often forgotten people in our city, and we became consumed with breaking cycles of poverty, many of which are fueled by generations growing up without fathers.
Since 2015, we have devoted our lives to serving people at one of life’s most vulnerable moments—the day they are released from prison. Through a network of peer mentors, our goal is to give every person released from prison in Texas the support and opportunity to succeed.
