Questions people ask

Who can volunteer?

Adults 18 and older. Some roles may need a background check, and prisons have their own rules for letters and visits. We’ll tell you what your role needs before you start.

Do I need experience?

No. Every role starts with training. Kindness and follow-through matter most.

Do I have to be religious?

No. Many Angel Teams meet at churches, but you can help either way.

How soon will I start helping?

It depends on your role and on who is coming home near you. We can’t promise a date.

Is it safe?

Letters go through the prison’s approved mail or messaging system, and staff may read them. Training covers privacy, healthy limits, and what to do if something doesn’t feel right.

I’ve been to prison or jail. Can I volunteer?

Yes. Many of the speakers in our course have been to prison themselves. If your role has extra rules for people with a record, we’ll go over them with you.

Does it cost anything?

Training is free. Some prison messaging apps charge a small fee per message, and the training explains how that works.

Where do you work?

Anywhere in the U.S. You can write letters from any state. For in-person help, we look at who is coming home near you.
